Septic Maintenance chemicals are designed and sold to help increase the bacteria level in your septic tank. This increased bacteria level is supposed to help dissolve the scum and solid waste levels in your septic tank. In our opinion these chemicals are of very little help. The bacteria in your tank is usually sufficient to break down the scum level at the bottom of your tank. However, the bacteria does very little to break down the solid waste level at the top of the tank. This solid waste level at the top is what backs up 90% of all septic tanks that we see. Firehouse Septic recommends saving your money on these maintenance products and putting it to better use by pumping your septic tank on a regular basis every 3 to 5 years.
