What toilet paper should I buy on a septic tank system?
First and foremost, when you are on a septic tank system and you are buying toilet paper you should always look for the "Septic Safe" seal of approval on the packaging. You may wonder what makes toilet paper septic safe. In general, toilet paper is septic safe if it breaks down easily. Although to packages of two toilet papers may both say septic safe on them, one may be more safe than the other. One thing that makes toilet paper better for your septic system is the number of plys of the toilet paper. Single ply toilet paper is always better for your septic tank simply because it will break down more quickly than double ply. Another thing to look for is the color of the toilet paper. The more white the toilet paper is, the more bleach they used to manufacture it. More bleach means it is harder to decompose. One last thing you can look for to make your toilet paper more septic safe is if the toilet paper company uses recycled materials. Recycled materials tend to break down more easily as well. If you follow all of these guidelines when buying your toilet paper, your septic tank's life will be longer and you will have less problems with you septic system in general.
Also remember, the only thing that should be being flushed down your toilet is toilet paper. Flushable wipes that claim they are septic safe are NEVER a good idea. Also, feminine products are another item that should never be flushed.
